Favourite Toronto Charities

please donateOne of the great things about getting organized and getting rid of “stuff” is that a lot of that stuff can be put to good use by others. I’m lucky enough to work in a city that has many great organizations that will take donations from my clients and get them to where they’re needed. Here are just a few of my favourite such places:

Dress for Success

The mission of Dress for Success Toronto is “to promote the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life.”

They’re always looking for donations of clean and ready to wear, modern, high quality professional women’s wear including:

  • New and gently used professional women’s clothing of all sizes
  • New and gently used accessories
  • New (unopened) make-up and hygiene products
  • New pantyhose and undergarments
  • New and gently used professional footwear
  • New and gently used outerwear
  • New and gently used purses

Furniture Bank

Their mission is “to transfer gently used furniture and household goods donated to us by individuals or corporations to people who have recently transitioned out of homelessness. We help turn an empty space into a true home with a kitchen table to enjoy meals, a comfortable space to share stories of the day and bug free beds for safe sweet dreams.” In 2011, Furniture Bank helped 2,572 families (over 5,000 people, including nearly 1,600 children).

Furniture bank needs donations of basic apartment furnishings including:

  • dressers
  • kitchen table
  • dining room tables
  • beds of all sizes
  • mattresses

ArtsJunktion is “a depot for receiving and distributing donated materials and supplies to be used in educational and creative programs within the TDSB: in classroom, artistic in-school creations, curriculum projects, Board parenting centres, concurrent and afterschool programs.” Random scraps of what may seem like junk to you can be put to wonderful artistic use by students, so before you throw it out, consider giving it to ArtsJunktion.

They’re looking for donations of:

  • binders
  • paper circles, strips and offcuts
  • letter and legal hanging folders
  • single wallpaper rolls and wallpaper books
  • envelopes
